Have your say – diagnostics and reference data for the AR7 Fast Track

The CMIP Panel has approved the concept for a new Rapid Evaluation Framework (REF), proposed by the Model Benchmarking Task Team, for the CMIP AR7 Fast Track focused on supporting the next IPCC Assessment Report 7 (AR7) cycle. Now the model benchmarking task team are looking to work with the community to identify a small number of priority diagnostics and the benchmarks that will be incorporated into the design of the REF for the AR7 Fast Track.

The Model Benchmarking task team is inviting modellers, modelling centres, dataset and data infrastructure providers to respond to the Rapid Evaluation Framework: Diagnostics and reference data survey by the 18th September.

The task team are initially focusing on diagnostics with a temporal resolution of monthly means with already have commonly used, open, observation reference data.  The intention is to have capability for higher temporal resolutions and they do ask in this survey for suggestions.  They also ask that community members or dataset providers aware of relevant new/forthcoming observation datasets, to identity them.

Modelling Centres

The Model Benchmarking Task Team want to ensure they cover what would be helpful/useful for modelling centres if the REF is run at the modelling centres offline – they are planning to provide a containerised package option.  If your centre is interested in running the REF on your own output then please respond to this survey.

Dataset Providers

The Model Benchmarking Task Team caution that they can only provide the observational data if it is fully open for use, including commercial use, equivalent to Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) or Creative Commons Public Domain Dedication (CC0)  and already conforms to obs4MIPs standards (v2.5) Obs4MIPs Data Specifications version 2.5 (ODS2.5) (zenodo.org)

Note

The survey was launched on the 30th August. Responses should be submitted using the form: the Rapid Evaluation Framework: Diagnostics and reference data survey by the 18th September.
