Understanding the CMIP7 Data Request requirements for the Impacts and Adaptation community (session 1)

14 January @ 08:00 09:00 UTC

The Impacts and Adaptation (I&A) author team have some unique requirements for the CMIP7 Data Request. With many of these communities being newer to CMIP, the I&A team would like the opportunity to discuss their requirements with modelling centres and understand modelling centre’s intentions for data production. In particular, the I&A team want to ensure their request is produced as much as is reasonable possible and so if changes to their data request are required, they wish to collaborate with the modelling centre community on this.

This meeting will allow the I&A team to underscore the way that they have tried to convey our interests in the CMIP7 Data Request process.  This will also allow them to discuss areas that need some give and take negotiations, for example around temporal resolution and time slices when resources are limited.

The I&A team therefore invite modelling centre representatives to join this discussion to make the Data Request is as easy to use as possible, whilst ensuring it helps scientists answer as many scientific questions as possible.

Please note, this meeting is being held across two different sessions on 14th January 2025:

  1. 08:00-09:00 UTC
  2. 17:00-18:00 UTC

The two meetings are being held to enable participation from colleagues working in different time zones. You only need to attend one of the two meetings. Please indicate your preferred timezone when registering below.

Agenda

  • An overview of the CMIP7 I&A Data Request
  • I&A guidance on prioritising variable groups within opportunities
  • Topics that require discussion between ESM groups and I&A Team:
    • Added benefit of higher temporal resolution
    • Important time horizons and time slices given limited resources
    • Prioritisation of select experiments for I&A variable groups within broader MIPs
  • Opportunities that facilitate likely follow-on steps in the pipeline between ESM outputs and impacts and adaptation applications (e.g., downscaling, bias-adjustment, impacts modeling)
  • Timeline considerations for impacts and adaptation opportunities given IPCC AR7 deadlines
