The Data Request Task Team and Thematic Author Groups request feedback on the harmonised CMIP7 Data Request content in the v1.0 release to aid them as they work towards the next release, v1.1, on 30th January 2025.
Goals of this consultation
The main goal of this consultation phase is to ensure that v1.1 of the CMIP7 Data Request is stable enough for modelling centres to begin configuring their workflows, particularly for piControl and historical experiments.

How to contribute
The CMIP community is invited to provide feedback on v1.0. Detailed feedback is not compulsory though responses to the Overview Survey would be appreciated from as many centres/activities as possible. However, the Data Request Task Team appreciates any feedback to improve the request.
The v1.1 release will be published on 30th January 2025. The deadline for feedback which you would like to be considered in advance of the v1.1 release should be submitted by 23:59 UTC on 17th January 2025. Feedback submitted after this date is still welcome and will be considered for the v1.2 release in March 2025.
The earlier the Task Team receive feedback, the more stable future Data Request releases will be. Key feedback from CMIP6 highlighted that the frequently evolving Data Request caused issues for many modelling centres. The ongoing work and public consultations aim to reduce the number of updates required for the CMIP7 Data Request. Your feedback is essential for this.
1. Contributing feedback from a modelling centre
There are a few high level questions we would like input on from as many modelling centres as possible. In addition to this, we have three additional feedback options for those who would like to provide a greater insight to their centre’s production intent for Opportunities, variables, and variable groups. The links in the list below will direct you to more information about each feedback mechanism.
- Overview survey: requested from all modelling centres (estimated ~10 minutes to complete).
- Technical comments on specific Opportunities, variables, or variable groups: optional for modelling centres.
- Production intent for Opportunities and variable groups: optional for modelling centres. Information is useful for thematic author teams when undergoing their harmonisation work.
- Production intent for Variables: optional for modelling centres. Information is useful for thematic author teams when undergoing their harmonisation work.
We request one consolidated response from each modelling centre, so please circulate the materials to all necessary people in your centre and collate the responses into the feedback sheet and email them to . More details on how to access the materials and provide feedback are given below.
2. Contributing feedback from a MIP or other coordinated community activity
There are a few high level questions we would like input on from as many MIPs/activities as possible. For this we request you complete the Overview Survey. If you have additional comments on specific Opportunities, variables, or variable groups, please see the Comment Forms section below.
We request one consolidated response from each MIP/activity on the Overview Survey, so please circulate the materials to all necessary people in your activity and collate the responses into the feedback sheet and email them to . More details on how to access the materials and provide feedback are given below.
3. Contributing feedback as an individual
If you have spotted an issue with an Opportunity, variable group, or variable, we encourage you to complete the relevant Comment Form to inform the thematic author teams.
When do I need to contribute by?
This is an in-real-time consultation. Those providing input are advised to do so as early as possible so the thematic author teams and Data Request Task Team can make decisions in good time before the next release.
We request survey responses are submitted as soon as possible, with the final deadline of 23:59 UTC on 17th January 2025.
The deadline for more detailed feedback from modelling centres, which you would like to be considered in advance of the next Data Request release v1.1, should be submitted before 23:59 UTC on 17th January 2025. Feedback submitted after this date is still welcome and will be considered for v1.2, due for release at the end of March 2025.

Feedback methods
1. The overview survey
A few high-level questions have been compiled by the Data Request Task Team to inform their work moving forwards. The questions vary a little depending on the community you are representing (e.g. a modelling centre vs a MIP).
The survey should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. A PDF copy of all questions is available to gather a consolidated response across your centre/activity, but please note we will only accept responses via the form.

2. Comment forms
If you find any technical issues any variables, or have specific feedback on any of the Opportunities or variable groups, we request this feedback is submitted via the dedicated comment forms. This ensures the feedback goes directly to the relevant group managing that field.
3. Modelling centre production intent for Opportunities and variable groups
If your modelling centre is able to provide production intent information on Opportunities and/or variable groups, we have provided an additional form to collect this information.
In this form, there are six questions to gather the internal priorities of your centre for different Opportunities. The completion of this section should take around 10-15 minutes once the information has been collated from across your centre.
Underneath these Opportunities questions, there are additional optional questions to indicate your internal priorities for variable groups. Only variable groups attached to Opportunities you have indicated you will produce will appear in this section. This section will likely take longer to complete. Please note that the form will not save your answers if you leave the webpage, we apologise for any inconvenience caused.
To facilitate gathering this information from across your centre, you can download a PDF version of the form. However, please note that we will only accept submissions via the form linked below.
4. Modelling centre production intent for Variables
To facilitate the collection of feedback on the variables, a subset of the Data Request metadata has been exported into an Excel spreadsheet.
The spreadsheet contains three sheets, plus a covering guidance sheet:
- Opportunities list
- Variable Groups list
- Variables list
Full guidance on filling in the feedback spreadsheet can be found on the covering guidance sheet. Returning a completed feedback spreadsheet is not compulsory – the Data Request Task Team will accept any incomplete spreadsheets. For example, you may only want to review new variables.
In each sheet you will find some of the key metadata to describe the Opportunities, Variable Groups, and Variables (in the dark blue table). Full metadata is available on Airtable. To the right of the variables table are some questions to indicate the production intent of your modelling centre (in the blue-green table).
Please only provide one consolidated response via the spreadsheet from each modelling centre. There are columns to leave short comments or clarifications in the spreadsheet, but the Task Team requests detailed comments or technical issues with Variables to be submitted via the comment forms (see above). This will ensure that the thematic author teams can review the comments and make the required changes. It will also help to increase transparency across the Data Request consultation process.
