A perspective on WCRP and CMIP and future challenges

24 July @ 15:30 16:00 UTC

Event overview

Cath Senior has worked at the UK Met Office for 38 years, and was appointed as a Principal Fellow in January 2023, the highest scientific level position in the organisation. Across her impressive career, Cath has worked at the forefront of climate modelling and previously led a team of climate scientists working to understand and improve model simulations of present day and future climate at the Met Office. In December 2022, Cath was appointed as a co-director of the UK National Climate Science Partnership which is aiming to provide a coordinated UK national capability in climate science to inform climate solutions across society.

Cath was co-chair of the World Climate Research Councils (WCRP) Working Group on Coupled Models (WGCM) from 2015-2022. This group co-ordinates the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) whose model simulations underpin the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessment reports. She was also interim co-chair and lead author of the strategy for the new WCRP core project on Earth System Modelling and Observations (ESMO) and remains a member of the ESMO Scientific Steering Committee and the Wider CMIP Panel.

Having recently announced her retirement, this Special Seminar will welcome Cath to share her Perspective on WCRP and CMIP and future challenges. At this session brief remarks will also be provided by CMIP Panel members Karl Taylor and Helene Hewitt.
