Have your say on the variables for CMIP7

Picture of a server room

In an analysis of the CMIP6 Survey, most users found the CMIP6 Data Request to be too complex with too little documentation. However the value in a consistent Data Request was also commonly reported. The survey also found significant tensions, including:

  • Data users wanting more variables but data producers struggling with the size of request, and
  • Those wanting fewer updates to the Data Request with others wanting more regular version releases.

Harmonised Thematic Variables

The Data Request Task Team have developed an activity that works with community representatives to devise a controlled list of high priority variables that facilitate the majority of user needs. This activity relies on feedback from the community on variables needed from CMIP7 experiments and the scientific opportunities they can help to investigate through public consultation.

This list of variables will be developed across five thematic areas:

  • Atmosphere
  • Earth system
  • Impacts and adaptation
  • Land and land-ice
  • Ocean and sea-ice

Author teams have been assembled in these five thematic areas to coordinate the relevant communities for each theme.

In this public consultation (the first of three across 2024), the Data Request Task Team asks you to propose new opportunities, variable groups, experiment groups, and variables for them to review and compile their harmonised lists for the CMIP7 Harmonised Data Request. There are also opportunities to raise errors on existing CMIP6 variables which need fixing or comment on proposals others have also made in this consultation.

Deadline for contributions: 12th September 2024
