MIPs Overview
Model Intercomparison Projects (MIPs) address specific science questions across the climate and earth science communities. CMIP first endorsed MIPs during its sixth phase to build on the DECK and CMIP historical simulations and to fill the scientific gaps of the previous CMIP phases. The DECK and CMIP historical simulations, together with the use of CMIP data standards, will be the entry cards for models participating in CMIP. Participation in MIPs by individual modelling groups is at their own discretion and depends on their scientific interests and priorities.
Registered MIPs
As the planning for CMIP progresses into its next phase, as does the way we are keeping track of work across the community. In order to reduce duplication of effort across MIPs and modelling centres and to foster collaboration, we have launched a MIP registration form.
We encourage all ongoing and new MIPs (CMIP6-endorsed MIPs and others) to register. This will act as a source of information for CMIP governance to consider when discussing the design of CMIP7, as well as information for the climate science community on the activities going on globally. Please note that MIP registration does not provide endorsement.
There is no deadline for registration but early engagement will ensure your MIP information is available and you will be kept informed of the latest MIP-relevant developments in planning this phase of CMIP.
You can view all the currently registered MIPs below. Click on the MIP to read more information. To view the MIPs in a new window, or to view in full screen, follow this link.
The CMIP6-Endorsed MIPs

During the CMIP6 cycle, specific science questions were addressed through endorsed MIPs. Below you can find all of the CMIP6-endosed MIPs. Click on the MIP to read more information, including a MIP summary, details on joining the MIP mailing list, a reference to the MIP overview paper, and a list of models who have submitted data to the MIP.

Information For MIP Convenors
We have launched MIP registration! See more details and register using the form below (alternatively, open the form in a new tab by following this link). MIP registration is open to all ongoing and new MIPs.
In the registration form below, we ask that you provide information on your MIP, including an abstract and its current stage of development, and at least one lead scientific and technical contact. We hope to make MIP contact details available on the website to ease collaboration, but please note that you can opt out of this information being publicly available.
There is no deadline for registration but early engagement will ensure your MIP information is available and you will be kept informed of the latest MIP-relevant developments in planning this phase of CMIP.
