Uncertainty Metadata drop-in: UK Workshop Report Back

21 August, 2025 @ 15:30 16:30 UTC

The CMIP Model Benchmarking Task Team hosted a virtual event providing a report back to the WCRP, GCOS and CEOS communities of the outcomes and recommendations of a UK-led workshop on a new metadata standard for uncertainty information.

Members of the CMIP Model Benchmarking Task Team were invited to participate in the workshop due to their role in creating and developing the  Rapid Evaluation Framework (Climate-REF), alongside those involved in the UK’s ARIA Forecasting Tipping Points Programme.  Both initiatives had been identified by the UK’s National Metrology Institute; National Physical Laboratory (NPL) as having urgent needs and divergent approaches to requirements for, and use of, uncertainty information from established observation data producers and publishing providers such as the European Space Agency’s (ESA)  Climate Change Initiative, WMO Integrated Global Observing System, and the WCRP Earth System Modelling and Observations’ (ESMO) obs4MIPs panel.

The event, which was chaired by the CMIP Model Benchmarking Task Team co-leads, was aimed at those governing CF conventions, GCOS, CEOS and WCRP core projects and panels including obs4MIPs and/or with decision making ability and leadership in global scientific research activities, although anyone from the WCRP, GCOS and CESO Communities are welcome to register.

During the session, the NPL convenors reported back on the key outcomes and recommendations from the workshop and then invited reflections from delegates representing WCRP ESMO, GCOS and CEOS. There was then an opportunity for attendees to ask questions and for open discussion.
